Fraunhofer IOF – Towards high-dimensional quantum communication in space

Entangled photons are a key resource in quantum technology. They act as low-noise probes in imaging and sensing, as versatile information carriers in quantum information processing or as tamper-proof padlocks for cryptography. In this talk, I will outline ongoing activities related to the development of highly efficient entangled photon sources, photonic technologies for the manipulation and transmission of high-dimensional quantum states of light, as well as optical engineering challenges towards the deployment of quantum optical hardware in satellite-based quantum communication networks.

Speaker profile: Dr. Fabian Steinlechner received his PhD in 2015 from ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences where his doctoral research focused on the development of quantum light sources for applications in Space. As a PostDoc at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information in Vienna, he contributed to the application of entangled photons in loophole-free tests of non-locality, quantum sensing, high-dimensional quantum information processing, and long-distance quantum communication in free-space and fiber links. In August 2018 he was appointed junior group leader within the Attract-Programme of the Fraunhofer Society. He currently heads the “Photonic Quantum Communication” group at Fraunhofer IOF and the “Photonic Quantum Information” group at the Abbe Center of Photonics of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

Institute profile: The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF, based in Jena, Germany, conducts research on the development of light as a means of solving a wide range of problems and application scenarios. The work of the research institute, founded in 1992, therefore focuses on application-oriented research on light generation, light guidance and light measurement. Together with researchers from basic research and industry, innovative solutions are developed that provide a technological advantage in science and industry and open up new fields of application for photonics.
